Towing a car with an automatic transmission can damage the transmission if done incorrectly, especially if the rear wheels are on the ground. If you don't disconnect the driveshaft, the transmission internals spin without lubrication, which can destroy the transmission.

Here is how to make it safe for towing:

  • Raise the rear of the car safely using jack stands.
  • Remove two bolts from the universal joint (U-joint), located closer to the middle of the car. Use a 13mm socket.
  • Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential by removing 3 bolts at the rear flex disc. Use a Torx T60 socket and counter-hold with an 18mm wrench.
  • Slide the driveshaft forward slightly to disengage it from the differential.
  • Secure the driveshaft away from the driveshaft (e.g., strap it to the exhaust).
